RemoteStateTax.com is a free tool that helps remote and hybrid workers in the United States understand which state they actually owe income tax to. The rules around multi-state taxation are confusing, inconsistent across states, and not well documented in one place — so this site exists to make them searchable and answerable in under a minute.
State income tax rates and rules are derived from each state's Department of Revenue publications and updated annually. Reciprocity agreements are sourced from the participating states' nonresident withholding certificates. Convenience-of-employer rule guidance follows the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance's TSB-M-06(5)I memorandum and subsequent guidance.
RemoteStateTax.com is an informational tool. The calculations and explanations on this site are not legal, tax, or accounting advice. State tax laws change, and individual situations vary — always confirm your specific situation with a licensed CPA or your state's Department of Revenue before filing.
The calculator and state guides are free to use and require no sign-up. We earn a commission if you file with one of the tax-software partners we link to (TurboTax, TaxAct, TaxSlayer, ezTaxReturn, etc.) at no additional cost to you. We do not sell user data and we do not require an email address to use the tool.
